Ange Postecoglou has been tipped to switch to a back-three for Tottenham next season after Radu Dragusin’s “outstanding” performance for Romania at Euro 2024.

The January transfer window arrival starred in his nation’s 3-0 win over Ukraine in their opening game of the tournament, with the 22-year-old the standout performer for his team.

Dragusin often found himself on the bench after his arrival from Genoa at the turn of the year, failing to dislodge the first-choice pairing of Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven when they were all available.

But his performance in Germany caught the eye of BBC Sport pundits Ashley Williams and Danny Murphy in particular (17 June, 15:31) as they heaped praise on him.

“He’s got energy, we said he was good on the ball, he’s got first contact in the six-yard box, he’s driving his team all the way up the pitch, that’s not what he’s in the team for but he has the ability to do that,” Williams said while live on air.

“I’m happy for him, he had a great day today. As a former centre-half myself we don’t get the chance to score that many goals but that’s our bread and butter. If you do that, it gives the better players the chance to go and win the game for your team.”

Murphy then added his own two-pence, labelling the defender as “outstanding”.

“His performance deserves plaudits because he was outstanding, and the Tottenham fans watching that will be really pleased because they haven’t seen much of him. But he’s perfect for the Premier League,” he said.

Tottenham to switch formations for Radu Dragusin?

Host Mark Chapman then suggested Postecoglou should go with a back-three next season with Dragusin, Van de Ven and Romero in the middle with Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie bombing on from wing-back.

And it’s easy to see why when you look at his numbers from the win over Ukraine, where he shone.

According to SofaScore Dragusin completed 16 of 18 passes on the day for an 89% pass success rate, but that was arguably the worst part of his game.

The Romanian also made 10 clearances, more than anyone else on the pitch, won 100% of his aerial and ground duels (3/3) and didn’t concede a single foul throughout.

On top of that he made two successful blocks and made an interception too, proving just how vital he was to the team’s clean sheet.

It was a sensational performance, and Postecoglou will surely be watching on with an attentive eye at how a change of shape to get Dragusin into the side could aide Tottenham in the 2024/25 season.

In other Tottenham news, Spurs have been tipped to complete a deal for Ebere Eze this summer.
