Tottenham are interested in signing Denmark and Sporting Lisbon star Morten Hjulmand, with scouts sent to Germany to watch the midfielder battle against England at Euro 2024, according to Record.

The Portuguese newspaper reported in their print edition (22 June, page 23) that the 24-year-old shined against Gareth Southgate’s side in Frankfurt in front of Manchester United and Spurs scouts, even managing to get his name on the scoresheet.

Tottenham have been interested in Hjulmand for quite some time but will not only have to fend off a lot of competition from other Premier League clubs but will also have to convince Sporting to part ways with their player who has an £67.6million (€80million) release clause.

Hjulmand has also previously mentioned that he wishes to stay in Lisbon for at least another year.

What could Morten Hjulmand bring to Spurs?

Hjulmand could be an important addition to Tottenham because he brings a couple of key attributes that could improve the club’s midfield.

He has strong defensive skills as one of his main characteristics. He is an efficient player who bursts up the play, making effective tackles and interceptions.

That would give Spurs a solid defensive presence in midfield to protect the backline and win possession bunched up.

Hjulmand is also comfortable passing at large and short ranges; he moves the ball well around the pitch.

His vision helps create opportunities, thus ball flow—one of the most important aspects of attacking play that supports tempo control in the game.

The 24-year-old works hard and is tireless on the ball. All that Hjulmand brings into his press efficiency and ability to cover large areas while maintaining very high levels of energy throughout games in varying positions would be adding to a relentless and hard-working element in the midfield for Tottenham.

Hjulmand is also able to play anywhere across the midfield line, from deep-lying playmaker to box-to-box midfielder or even defensive anchor.

This provides greater tactical flexibility in Ange Postecoglou’s approach, who will be able to field several formations and use different strategies.

Lastly, for his relatively young age, Hjulmand has already shown leadership qualities by staying calm under pressure. This means that his presence might bring stability to the team during moments of crisis.
