Aston Villa expert unimpressed by Guendouzi signing after source's reveal

Matteo Guendouzi would be a “top” signing for Aston Villa, but concerns have been raised about his hot-headed nature.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Villa defender Alan Hutton raised concerns about the 25-year-old’s temperament and whether he could fill Douglas Luiz’s place.

Luiz has reached an agreement in principle to join Juventus, who are now negotiating a complex player swap deal with the Midlands giants.

Meanwhile, Villa have opened preliminary talks over a deal for Guendouzi, who has been contacted personally by Unai Emery about making a return to the Premier League.

Hutton does not believe the Marseille midfielder should be his replacement, but insisted he would be a good option to bolster the squad.

Guendouzi’s previous spell in the Premier League with Arsenal saw him collect 21 yellow cards and one red in 82 games, averaging a yellow every 3.9 games, although since moving to France, the average has dropped to one in 7.3.

This comes after Football Insider revealed that Aston Villa have opened preliminary talks to sign Guendouzi this summer.

Sources say Unai Emery is a big admirer of Guendouzi and has already spoken to him personally about the potential of a move to Villa Park.

Hutton admitted the deal would be a positive one for Villa, but insisted he would not be the replacement for Luiz.

“I don’t know if he’d be the perfect replacement [for Luiz],” he told Football Insider.

“He can be a bit of a hothead at times, I don’t know if he’s settled down since he was at Arsenal.

“He’s a good player, but is he going to come in and replicate everything Douglas Luiz has done at Villa? I don’t think so.

“If you’re trying to bolster the squad because you’re going to need it in a long season, especially playing in Europe, he could be a top signing.

“I’m not sure about him coming in as a replacement for Douglas Luiz though.”
