Dan Bardell has suggested that Manchester United and Everton will struggle to reach an agreement over the transfer fee for Jarrad Branthwaite this summer.

The Times have reported (14 June) that the 21-year-old has agreed personal terms with the Red Devils ahead of a potential move. BBC Sport have since reported that a £35million bid has been submitted by United and rejected by the Blues.

It is understood that the Toffees want £80million for the defender but Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell is unsure whether Erik ten Hag’s side can afford that fee.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, Bardell said: “There may be some difficulty in the fee. I can see Manchester United and Everton being a long way apart in terms of their valuations.

United have their own PSR concerns so I’m not sure that they’ll be able to go out and spend £70m to £80m on Branthwaite.

Even if terms have been agreed personally I think it is going to be a difficult deal to get moving and I’d be interested to see how it develops.

Everton are going to try and get as much as possible and I don’t think Man United have the huge transfer budget like they would’ve in the past.

Everton handed boost to keep Jarrad Branthwaite

The Toffees have very public financial problems with Farhad Moshiri doing his utmost to sell the club over the past 12 months and beyond.

With the restraints that Premier League PSR rules are having on clubs, a sale could be imperative to avoid further points deductions next season.

After two separate punishments last season, Sean Dyche’s side were able to stay up with time to spare in a great achievement for the club.

One of the driving factors behind this was the solidity of the defence which gave the Toffees a great base in which to build from.

Branthwaite was one of the key factors in this success but with the problems that PSR could cause he would be an easy option to sell this summer.

At £70m he would certainly give Moshiri a financial boost and give Dyche more wiggle room in the transfer market but would still be a huge loss.
