Philippe Clement hinted that he had the option to bail out of his Rangers tenure, according to Daily Record journalist Michael Gannon.
Writing for the paper’s Sunday Mail edition (15 September, 69), Gannon shared that the Belgian made an “aside” that he had the opportunity to make an Ibrox escape in the summer.
However, he added that fans should not be “naive” about the situation, noting that Clement was able to strengthen his hand in the form of a new contract.
Gannon wrote: “It was interesting Clement hinted in a little aside on Friday he had the option to bail out in the summer but chose to stay and fight. That should encourage punters but let’s not be naive. He stayed but made sure there was a stiffer insurance policy in the form of an extended contract.
“Clement isn’t going to quit, that’s for sure, no matter what happens and regardless of the heat coming from fans. Rangers need to build up a head of steam to reduce the overall temperature.”
Like it or not, Philippe Clement is here to stay at Rangers
It seems an awful long time ago now that Clement had Rangers fighting on four fronts last season and had even overhauled Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership at one point in the 2023/24 campaign.
Since then, a meek surrender in the title race, a Scottish Cup final defeat to their bitter rivals, an underwhelming transfer window, and a mediocre (at best) start to this campaign – including a woeful Old Firm defeat before the international break – has seen Clement’s stock plummet among the fanbase.
There are mitigating factors. The shock departure of James Bisgrove, the Ibrox debacle, the loss of experienced heads for little-to-no cash so that replacements were hard to fund, have all played their part.
But, still, you just expect more from Rangers and frankly Clement needs a huge run of form before the next Old Firm derby on 2 January to win back faltering support and try to make a fist of a title race that, brutally, already appears beyond their reach.
In other Rangers news, Clement’s Tavernier claim has been dismissed as act of lunacy mooted.
