Tottenham have been backed to sign Feyenoord defender David Hancko amid a £35million update.

Ange Postecoglou is currently without several first-team defenders. As a result, Spurs are “definitely” looking to sign a new centre-back in January.

According to TBR Football [18 December], one of the players on their shortlist is Hancko, who could be available for less than the £35m Feyenoord were demanding in the summer.

However, while Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – admits that Hancko could be signed, he isn’t so sure that the 27-year-old will be available for a cut-price fee.

“He fits the profile of player we’re looking for very well,” Wenham said.

“I like him, he’s a good size and seems perfectly capable of playing both at left-back and centre-back. However, I’m not sure why they would accept less than £35m for him. He’s gone out and performed in the UEFA Champions League this season, which would have only enhanced his reputation.

“Therefore, I don’t see a basis for them accepting less than they wanted in the summer. However, he is a perfect fit for the profile we’re looking to sign, and I think that would be a shrewd signing and one I would back the club to make.”

Tottenham to sign Feyenoord defender David Hancko?

If Postecoglou likes Hancko, and he is available for a cut-price fee, that would no doubt be music to Daniel Levy’s ears. However, if as Wenham suggested the defender isn’t available on the cheap, Levy still must sign him.

The Spurs chairman is under pressure from fans in North London and needs to prove in January that he is serious about pushing the club forward on the pitch.

Therefore, if Feyenoord do still want £35million, and Postecoglou has asked for Hancko to be signed, Levy must do everything in his power to agree on a deal.

After all, it isn’t as if the club don’t have the funds, with yet another big payday lined up.

In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou has been warned four players might never play for him again.
