Ange Postecoglou could axe Son Heung-min in one of three changes when Tottenham travel to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Thursday.
Postecoglou’s side will be keen to bounce back after their 6-3 Premier League defeat against Liverpool at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday [22 December], with Gary Neville amused by one player during the clash.
However, Forest are flying high under former Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo, currently sat third in the Premier League. Therefore, Spurs could be up against it in the East Midlands, and Postecoglou will be relieved that he has at least been handed one injury boost ahead of the match.
And the Australian could look to take advantage of this and make changes at the City Ground on 26 December.
Ange Postecoglou to make three Tottenham changes v Nottingham Forest
Fraser Forster will expect to continue deputising for Guglielmo Vicario between the sticks despite shipping six goals and making one error which led to a shot against Arne Slot’s side [Sofascore].
Djed Spence did relatively well up against Mohamed Salah on Sunday despite the eventual result. The 24-year-old won seven ground duels, made five tackles and completed 94 per cent of his passes. Meanwhile, Pedro Porro was dribbled past once and gave possession away 21 times.
Therefore, Postecoglou could decide to rest Porro and move Spence to right-back, which would then allow Destiny Udogie to return on the left.
In the heart of defence, Postecoglou is likely to have no choice but to stick by Archie Gray and Radu Drăgușin, despite the latter winning just 33 per cent of his aerial duels and summing up Spurs’ “mess” at the back against Liverpool.
Rodrigo Bentancur is available once again after serving a seven-match suspension. Therefore, he is likely to come straight back into the side in place of Yves Bissouma, who won just 50 per cent of his ground duels, was dribbled past once and made one error which led to a shot against the Reds.
Ange Postecoglou to axe Tottenham star Son Heung-min against Nottingham Forest
Bentancur could start alongside Pape Matar Sarr, while James Maddison is likely to keep his place after scoring against Liverpool and completing 82 per cent of his passes, with one of those key.
On the right, Postecoglou will likely stick by Dejan Kulusevski, who also scored against Liverpool and played one key pass. Solanke grabbed a goal and an assist against Slot’s side and will expect to keep his place. However, Son Heung-min could be dropped to the bench, with Brennan Johnson taking his place on the left.
Son cut a tired figure last time out, failing to provide an accurate cross from two attempts while succeeding with just 50 per cent of his attempted dribbles. As a result, the 32-year-old could benefit from a rest on Boxing Day, especially with the games coming thick and fast.
In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou will be sacked despite what one fan said recently.
