John Wenham doesn’t understand why Tottenham wouldn’t be considering handing Son Heung-min a longer deal with the club.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose has described suggestions that the South Korea international could move on from North London as “strange”.
It comes after TBR Football reported (8 November) that Son’s entourage are not happy with Spurs’ decision to simply take up their one-year option in the forward’s contract (via the Telegraph, 4 November), rather than offer him a new deal.
As a result, the Saudi Pro League have taken notice, with Son emerging as a transfer target ahead of next summer.
However, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – thinks a decision will be made after the one-year option in Son’s current contract is activated.
“I don’t know why there wouldn’t be talks about a longer deal at the club,” Wenham said.
“Son has always been phenomenal for us. Every year he is pretty much our top scorer, he is the club captain, and he contributes massively. Therefore, I would find it strange that there would be any talk of him potentially moving on.
“I suppose the sensible thing would be to sort out the one-year extension, and then take the next decision from there.”
Tottenham to offer Son Heung-min a brand-new long-term contract?
Spurs have been urged to offer Son a new deal, and it would appear as though Wenham agrees that this would be the right move.
Just like Wenham, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King thinks the club would be “foolish” to let Son go.
Should Spurs opt against offering Son a new deal, that could cause problems next summer, especially if his entourage are unhappy and a Saudi Pro League side come calling.
Just because Son would be tied with the club until 2026 contractually, it doesn’t guarantee that the 32-year-old would remain in North London beyond next summer.
If he is unhappy, and a big-money offer comes in, the Spurs captain could push for an exit.
The last thing anybody at Spurs would want is a messy end to Son’s time with the club, which has largely been positive. Therefore, Tottenham should perhaps negotiate and try to meet some of their star forward’s terms.
In other Tottenham news, the club have opened talks to sign a Bayer Leverkusen star.
