John Wenham believes Tottenham will “definitely” be looking to sign a new centre-back in January.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose thinks the North London side need to start thinking long-term in this position.

With Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven both injured, Ben Davies filled in and was praised for his “superb” display in Spurs’ 4-0 Premier League win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium [23 November].

However, the Welshman is expected to leave Tottenham in the summer when his contract expires.

Therefore, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – thinks a new centre-back needs to be signed, especially with the injury issues that Ange Postecoglou’s side are experiencing in that area.

“We saw that Spurs had some interest in signing a centre-back during the summer,” Wenham said.

“Davies has only got seven months left to run on his Spurs contract which means the club do need to start planning ahead.

“Therefore, I think they will definitely be in the market for a new centre-back in January, especially with these constant injury issues for Romero and van de Ven.”

Tottenham to sign a brand-new centre-back for Ange Postecoglou in January?

Davies is a left-back by trade. However, he has filled in well at centre-back over the past few years for Tottenham.

Romero and van de Ven have both struggled with injury issues over the past two seasons. Therefore, Postecoglou will no doubt be grateful to Davies who has stepped up when needed.

However, with the 31-year-old potentially on his way out of Spurs, a new centre-back will be needed, and if Spurs can sign someone as early as January, that would be a huge boost for the club as they look to compete on multiple fronts during the second half of the season.

In other Tottenham news, the club are eyeing a second Sunderland player as a Chris Rigg update is shared.
