Lilywhite Rose: Tottenham loanee to be recalled in January after recent developments

Tottenham are expected to recall Matthew Craig from his loan spell with Barnsley in January.

Several Spurs players who are currently out on loan could be recalled as a result of recent struggles.

Craig is one of those players, which could spell bad news for the midfielder as this loan spell was expected to determine his long-term future in North London.

However, after he was left out of the Barnsley squad which won 3-1 away at Peterborough United in League One on Sunday (29 December), John Wenham posted via Lilywhite Rose on X that Craig is likely to be recalled to Spurs.

And Wenham has spoken exclusively to Tottenham News, confirming that this is what he expects will happen, and providing more information on what might be next for the 21-year-old.

“Craig started the season by playing every game for Barnsley,” Wenham said.

“However, he is no longer getting in the team. Therefore, I expect that he will be recalled by Tottenham in January. He could then be sent out on loan to another club where he is starting every game, just as he did for Doncaster during the second half of last season.”

Craig started well with Barnsley, featuring in all but one one their first 14 league games. However, he has played just 36 minutes of football across the club’s last nine League One matches.

Therefore, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him return to Spurs in January before being sent elsewhere, with Ange Postecoglou unlikely to integrate the Englishman into the first team.

And Craig isn’t the only player expected to return next month, with an announcement on another loanee to be made “within a couple of days”.

In other Tottenham news, the club might already have a replacement lined up for one injured player.
