John Wenham wants Tottenham to have a brand-new goalkeeper signed on 1 January.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes the North London club should already be working on a transfer behind-the-scenes.
Guglielmo Vicario has been ruled out for “months” after undergoing surgery for a fracture of his right ankle [via Football London, 27 November].
Therefore, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – thinks any potential plans to sign a goalkeeper in the summer need to be brought forward, even if that means spending more money.
“I think Tottenham will be looking to sign a goalkeeper in January,” Wenham said.
“Vicario’s injury should bring forward any plans they had to sign a goalkeeper in the summer. Hopefully, if the recruitment team are doing their jobs right, Spurs will have signed a new goalkeeper on 1 January.
“They should already be working on that deal in the background. If they were lining someone up for the summer, bring it forward, even if that costs an extra £2million.”
Tottenham to pay extra to sign a brand-new goalkeeper in January?
It is unclear when exactly Vicario will return to action. Therefore, it would make sense for a brand-new goalkeeper to be brought to the club in January.
Forster is currently filling in as the number one between the sticks for Ange Postecoglou’s side. However, the 36-year-old is expected to leave the club next summer.
While there are some talented young shot-stoppers coming through in North London, they likely won’t be ready for consistent first-team football next season.
As a result, Spurs were going to need to sign a brand-new number two either way. Therefore, in light of Vicario’s injury, they could benefit from getting a move sorted in January.
In other Tottenham news, Sergio Reguilón is set to be offered an exit route by a La Liga club.
