Lineker and Shearer in stitches after what they heard about Everton transfer

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have been left in stitches after what Micah Richards told them about Neal Maupay’s Everton exit.

The French midfielder ended his difficult stay at Goodison Park in the final days of the transfer window as he joined Marseille on an initial loan deal with an obligation to make the deal permanent [L’Equipe, 29 August].

Maupay took to social media to post a clip from The Shawshank Redemption which shows the main character escaping the prison in the final act when news of his transfer broke and both Lineker and Shearer cracked up as Richards explained his tweet.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football on Wednesday (4 September, 9:00) Richards said: “Do you remember Shawshank Redemption when he breaks free at the end and he’s just stood there in the rain?

“As soon as he left Everton, he posted that on social media like they’d been holding him back and he’d escaped. It was ridiculous. How can you do that? I thought it was brilliant but so disrespectful to the Everton fans as well, it was mad.”

How much did Everton get from Marseille for Neal Maupay?

From an outside perspective, Maupay’s tweet may well have been funny, but from an Everton viewpoint, it just feels like another disrespectful action from a player who has spent the last few years slamming his own club.

The Frenchman has never seemed happy at Goodison Park and while some sections of the fanbase have been too hard on him, he hasn’t helped himself with his comments during his time on Merseyside and away on loan.

Thankfully, the striker’s time on Merseyside appears to be all but over, with a permanent move already agreed at the end of his loan spell. He is no longer the Everton supporters’ or Sean Dyche’s problem to deal with.

Hopefully, none of the new additions to the Blues playing squad will end up going down the same route as Maupay in the future. So far, players like Jake O’Brien and Iliman Nidaye have shown little evidence of behaving in that manner.
