Liverpool Sources: Big Van Dijk talks update today

Liverpool are likely to sit down for contract talks with Virgil van Dijk towards the end of this year, sources have told Football Insider.

The Reds captain is out of contract at the end of the 2024-25 campaign and has sparked some panic with his recent comments on his situation.

On Sunday (11 August), Van Dijk revealed there is “no update” on discussions over a new deal despite his clear importance to the Liverpool side.

He also called for the Merseysiders to dip into the transfer market for new additions – with Arne Slot’s side currently the only top-flight club yet to make a signing this summer.

Sources close to Liverpool say there have been no preliminary discussions between the club and Van Dijk yet as the player has only recently returned from the European Championships.

But it is believed there will be formal talks towards the end of 2024 – when Slot has his feet under the table at Anfield and the season is well underway.

Van Dijk was back at his best in the 2023-24 campaign after his form was questioned in the previous season.

He made 48 appearances in total last term, starting in 45 of those outings.

The centre-back captained the Reds as they won the League Cup final against Chelsea in February.

Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool back in 2018, will be 34 when his existing contract expires.
