'Love to think so' - Manager makes Ryan Jack transfer plea after Rangers exit

Departing Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack could make a move to Dundee this summer after being praised by Dees manager Tony Docherty.

Jack will leave the Gers after seven seasons on 30 June following the expiration of his Ibrox contract, and the 32-year-old has already said his goodbyes to the club ahead of the next chapter of his career [Instagram, 28 June].

Returning early from Euro 2024 with Scotland, Jack will now enter the free agent market, but when asked about the possibility of a transfer, Dundee boss Docherty professed his admiration for the midfielder.

In quotes reported by Glasgow World, Docherty said: “I’d love to think so. I love (Ryan) Jack, he’s a fantastic footballer and a brilliant person.

“But, I’ve not had any conversations with Jacko. If you are getting linked with that type of player then (good), but it’s just speculation.”

Right time for Ryan Jack to leave Rangers for new challenge

Docherty’s comments make clear that there is no guaranteed transfer on the table for Jack at the time of writing, but the 32-year-old won’t be short of Premiership offers this summer.

Experience at the top level is at a premium in the Scottish top-flight next season, and thus signing an midfielder with 330 Premiership appearances and 19 Scotland caps, for free, would be a shrewd move.

Rangers
Ryan Jack is one of four players who will be released by Rangers on 30 June.

Dundee, following their most successful season in years, could do much worse than bringing Jack into the Dens Park fold, and Docherty should urge his superiors to sanction a move as soon as possible.

Having already worked with the Dee manager during his time at Aberdeen, and having only played a bit-part role for the Gers and Scotland this season, Jack could also feel inclined to make a move happen.

When the light blues arrive at Dens Park with a new-look midfield next season, they could be facing a former player who will add plenty of bite to a Dundee side who caused Rangers plenty of problems last season [Neil McCann, 13 April].

In other Rangers news, Todd Cantwell could also be set to leave the club this summer.
