'Lovely Story' - Pundit delighted to see 'Quality' ace rejoin Rangers

Derek Ferguson admits he would have loved to get the opportunity to return to Rangers a second time just as Liam Kelly has this summer.

The former Motherwell keeper re-signed for the Light Blues after Euro 2024, having left without making an appearance as an academy product earlier in his career.

He said the chance to rejoin his former side was an offer he couldn’t turn down despite being well aware he will sit behind Jack Butland for the most part [Rangers Review, 13 July].

And Ferguson can see why as he was willing to do whatever it took when the possibility of a return from Hearts arose during his player career.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said of Kelly’s move: “The way he described it when he done a wee interview he’s only an injury away from getting a start for the Rangers side.

“So it was a kind of unusual way to look at it, but if both of them are fit Jack Butland in there.

“Kelly played well against Ajax, he had two or three unbelievable stops and he’s decent with his feet so he’s a good back up for Jack Butland. It’s a lovely story that, so it is.

“There was a talk when I was at Hearts that I might have had the opportunity to go back to Rangers. It didnae materialise because I think Walter [Smith] knew a couple of boys up at Dundee United.

“But that would have been a story, I’d have been jumping through hoops. I can’t believe I’ve said Hoops, that’s related to Celtic.

“But I’d have loved that, so I would, but it’s a lovely story for Liam to be back there.

“And he is a quality keeper, a Scottish international, so you can’t forget that.”

Liam Kelly returned to Rangers after Motherwell exit

Rangers Liam Kelly
Liam Kelly is one of few new Rangers signings with Premiership experience after leaving Motherwell.

Kelly’s signing made the departure of Robby McCrorie to Kilmarnock a relatively minor blow to Philippe Clement and arguably even provided an upgrade at the number two keeper spot.

The manager has publicly stated that starter Butland is the only player in the squad who is not available for a reasonable offer [Rangers Review, 14 July], but anything could change in the final days of the window.

And an offseason overhaul to the medical department haven’t prevented yet another injury list building up already this season.

So there is every chance that Kelly could get his chance at Ibrox, or Hampden Park, sooner or later.

In other Rangers news, another loan move has been agreed for a key player the Light Blues wanted to bring back.
