Keith Jackson believes Rangers extending Philippe Clement’s contract as their manager was a “ludicrous” decision.
The Belgian was offered a shock contract extension after the summer transfer window closed by ex-Chairman John Bennett despite the Gers’ poor start to the season, leaving many fans and pundits with plenty of questions.
Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (23 October), journalists Jackson and Scott McDermott were in agreement that it was a decision that didn’t make much sense.
“You’re looking back now and thinking, why the desperation to give Clement a new contract,” McDermott said.
To which Jackson replied: “It was madness, but we understood what it was, it was John Bennett trying to say that there’s a cohesion at the club and the leadership is all on the same page and that they were all moving forward together.
“It was all about saying, unity, cohesion, [saying] don’t worry guys we’ve got this but it was a bad move, it was actually quite ludicrous.”
Philippe Clement needs to prove his worth to Rangers
Rangers’ season so far hasn’t quite gone to plan, the club find themselves third in the Scottish Premiership, six points adrift of Celtic.
In fairness to Clement, several new players were welcomed through the Ibrox doors in the summer transfer window so they obviously needed time to gel but he himself told fans and the media to wait until October before he’s properly judged.
Well, we’re now at the end of October and realistically, not much has changed. The Gers are still slipping up and dropping points to teams such as Kilmarnock and Cyriel Dessers’ shooting capabilities have gotten no better.
Nobody expected the Gers to have the same quality of players as Celtic this term but most at least thought they’d put up a good fight for the title.
This has evidently not been the case and unless things turn around soon, Clement may as well accept fate and say goodbye to his role as the Gers’ manager.
However, should they end up with a positive result in their game against FCSB in the Europa League, it could help Clement’s case and potentially win some fans over.
In other Rangers news, Kevin Muscat has been linked with the Gers’ hot seat once again.
