Scott McDermott admits the atmosphere at Ibrox could get “toxic” in when Rangers play FCSB in the Europa League if Philippe Clement’s men don’t score the first goal of the tie.
The Gers are set to face FCSB in the league stage clash on Thursday (24 October) and will be looking to make amends after their 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock at the weekend.
Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (23 October), journalist McDermott shared his verdict on the pressure Clement currently finds himself under.
“That’s a guy feeling under serious pressure now and being asked awkward questions that he doesn’t like,” McDermott said.
“But that’s what happens when performances like Sunday at Kilmarnock, there’s been other ones so it’s not just that.
“I think tomorrow night is a tricky tie for them because I don’t expect Ibrox to be packed to the rafters, I don’t expect the atmosphere to be electric before the game.
“Punters are going to turn up and will be asking and expecting for some kind of performance, I tell you what if it doesn’t go well for them in the first 15 or 20 minutes or if they lose the first goal, it could start to get pretty toxic.”
Rangers need to make a statement in the Europa League against FCSB
Rangers’ loss to Kilmarnock on Sunday was arguably one of their worst performances of the season.
Since the start of the term, it’s felt like whenever there’s some sort of pressure on a game, the Gers have seemed to have an inability to perform, much like in their 3-0 loss to Celtic.
If Clement’s men came away from Rugby Park with all three points, they’d have halved the deficit between themselves and fellow title rivals, Aberdeen and Celtic.
However, that motivation was clearly not enough as the Gers have instead been left red-faced with their title hopes slowly slipping away.
Of course, the Gers still have Aberdeen to play at the end of the month but if Clement can’t find a way to get his squad to pull a win out of the bag against The Dons, it’s hard to see how John Gilligan could keep the Belgian employed.
Pressure is steadily mounting around the future of Clement and unless the squads decides to step their performances up a gear, things can only go from bad to worse.
