Stevie Clifford: Rangers man 'good month away' from starting games after injury return

Danilo is a “good month away” from starting first-team games for Rangers again, according to Stevie Clifford.

The Brazilian forward returned from injury to feature and score for the B Team in their 4-1 win over Stenhousemir, with the striker insisting he felt good after having recently undergone surgery [Four Lads, 22 October].

While fans are hoping to see Danilo return to compete with Cyriel Dessers for the starting striker spot, Four Lads host Clifford believes there is still some work to be done before the Brazilian starts games for the Gers.

Speaking on The Rangers Review YouTube channel (24 October, 27:40) he said: “In terms of the first-team, starting and things like that, I think we’re a good month away.

“We need more minutes from Danilo, will he be involved from the bench, will he get 10 minutes here and there? Absolutely, but this is the thing about the striking options.”

What has happened to Rangers striker Danilo at Ibrox?

Rangers fans are understandably desperate to see Danilo back in first-team action so that the burden of Dessers’ shoulders can finally be eased.

The Nigerian striker has been relied upon throughout 2024 to start almost every game up front for the Light Blues and while he has shown signs of improvement across his tenure in Glasgow, he is still far from the perfect forward.

Behind him, Hamza Igamane is the only real alternative if Danilo is unavailable. The Morrocon has shown some bright flashes in Gers colours but has struggled to make a major impact on the rare occasions he has been handed a start.

Throwing Danilo back into the mix will give Clement, or whoever is the Gers boss in a month’s time, a genuine alternative option to choose from, but the Gers would be stupid to rush the Brazilian back prematurely.

Since arriving in Scotland, the forward has had injury issue after injury issue and it will only further exacerbate things if he is put back in the fold before he has fully recovered.

Clement and Rangers are better off just taking their time with this one.
