Rangers will have to pay millions to sack Philippe Clement after contract developments at Ibrox, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.
The Belgian has come under pressure from pundits and supporters alike early this season, despite only putting pen to paper on a new deal in Glasgow at the start of the new Scottish Premiership season.
Although reports suggest the board remain united behind Clement currently [Chris Jack, 22 October], Plumley insists the Light Blues are financially equipped to part ways with the 50-year-old if results don’t improve.
“I think it’s likely to be accurate,” Plumley exclusively told Ibrox News.
“Nowadays we know that the trade-off with football managers is that when they sign contracts, they have clauses in there that if they’re sacked at any point, there will be compensation fees to pay.
“They can stretch into the millions depending on the value that you’re putting on that contract, the length of it and maybe when you choose to get rid of them, that might have financial implications.
“It’s there, it is a financial challenge and I think it often comes down to the club itself and the expectation levels and all the things that surround that decision.
“No doubt, Rangers will be under a lot of pressure from fans and of course the media talking about this if performances don’t start to go their way at the rate they feel they should be.
Will Rangers sack Philippe Clement at Ibrox?
“It’s a really tricky balance because it does cost to sack a manager, especially when they’ve just signed a contract fairly recently.
“They’ll be aware of that cost, but it’s the trade-off of if we do that how much is it going to cost and on the other side, do we think that’s the right thing to do?
“Ultimately, a lot of that comes down to the pressure of what happens on the pitch and that will drive the decision more so than the financial side of it for Rangers.”
Rangers currently sit third in the Premiership table, six points adrift of table-toppers Celtic and second-placed Aberdeen, with some already ruling them out of the title race.
It is unclear what will have to happen for the Ibrox board to consider Clement’s future in Glasgow, but some have suggested the showdown with Aberdeen at Pittodrie could well decide his fate.
