Everton are hoping to take advantage of Lyon’s situation to broker a cut-price deal for Orel Mangala, according to Foot Mercato.
The French outlet reported via their website on 16 November that the Toffees are “rubbing their hands” as they look to make Mangala’s loan move from Lyon permanent at a discounted rate.
This comes after it emerged that the Ligue 1 club have been handed a provisional relegation to the French second division and a transfer ban due to their financial situation [Fabrizio Romano, 15 November].
Everton want cut-price permanent transfer for Orel Mangala
Everton signed Mangala on a season-long loan in the summer, but did not include a buy option in the contract. This could prove to be a masterstroke as they are now in the driving seat to negotiate a permanent deal with Lyon on their own terms.
Lyon, for their part, will be regretting buying the Belgium international in the summer. They signed him on an initial loan from Nottingham Forest in the January transfer window this year before making the move permanent ahead of the 2024-25 season.
The Ligue 1 outfit spent a total of £29million during that process and could now make a severe loss on that sum.
Lyon owner John Textor’s interest in buying the Merseyside-based club may have helped Sean Dyche’s side acquire Mangala in the summer.
However, the Toffees might be feeling extremely lucky this week as they can possibly buy the midfielder for a bargain fee and are guaranteed to not have Textor as their owner. Dan Friedkin is edging closer to completing the takeover of the club [The Bobble].
In other Everton news, the Toffees’ stance over selling this “agitated” star in January has emerged.
