Lyon midfielder Corentin Tolisso has rubbished Philippe Clement’s claims that the French outfit’s financial superiority makes them favourites against Rangers on Thursday night.

The Gers will look to continue their Europa League momentum from last week’s impressive win in Malmo back to Ibrox, with Pierre Sage’s side first to visit.

Clement claimed a draw would be a “very, very good result” against the Ligue 1 giants in an attempt to fuel the narrative that Lyon should expect to win [BBC Sport, 2 October], citing some financial disparity between the clubs.

Tolisso, 30, responded as quoted by the Daily Record [2 October], saying: “Rangers were in pot one [of the draw], like us. I’d say it’s 50/50. I wouldn’t say Rangers are the underdogs by any means.

“We’re both big teams, playing at the same level. We both made a good start in our campaigns but this week, Rangers will have home advantage.

“Like us, they’ve not had the perfect start to the season but we’re improving and we want a big win.”

Rangers would blow the roof off Ibrox with win over Lyon

Rangers’ winning formula appears to have been struck in recent weeks, victorious in each of their four matches since the Old Firm and the first international break.

Last Thursday saw the European campaign kick off in style with a controlled display against Malmo, emerging with a deserved 2-0 win.

Sunday’s shaky performance against Hibernian still produced a narrow victory at Ibrox after Tom Lawrence’s stunner and Jack Butland’s penalty save, which will please many who are realising Clement’s side’s capability of grinding out wins when not at their best.

Tolisso also noted the Govan noise in his pre-match comments, stating teammates who faced the Gers with Lyon in 2021 told him it was among the “best atmospheres in a stadium you’ll ever find”.

Another win on Thursday would send Ibrox into bedlam, which could further spark a much-needed sustained run of form.

In other Rangers news, the conditions of the second chance seemingly offered to Ianis Hagi.
