'Made a mistake': Journalist has 'heard' Liverpool could've signed £25m Brighton star this summer
Christian Falk has heard that Liverpool could have signed Brighton midfielder Brajan Gruda this summer but didn't make a bid.
Liverpool missed out on the Martin Zubimendi signing this summer after he decided to reject the Reds, and it appears as if there was another player who could have joined.
Arne Slot hasn’t demanded many signings as Jurgen Klopp had already built a strong Liverpool squad prior to his departure at Anfield.
That didn’t stop the Reds from signing players though as Martin Zubimendi was the main target prior to his decision to stay at Real Sociedad.
This wasn’t the end of the world as the Reds still have Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch who can operate in the 6 position.
Joe Gomez’s future was one to watch in the final days of the transfer window but he decided to stay and fight for a place, which will have pleased Slot as he wasn’t too keen on losing him.
Interestingly, it appears as if there was a winger who could’ve joined Liverpool this summer…
Liverpool could have signed £25m Brighton star this summer
Brighton made nine signings this summer and spent well over £100m in the process, as their new manager, Fabian Hurzeler, sought to build a side that could compete in the Premier League.
The one signing in question was a £25 move for Brajan Gruda, who joined from Mainz.
According to Christian Falk via Caught Offside, Liverpool knocked on the door to sign the winger this summer but a move never materialised.
“One other English club also knocked on the door this summer – it was Liverpool.
“I heard that Liverpool were interested in him and perhaps they made a mistake not getting concrete with this one. That’s also the case for Bayern Munich, of course!
“In the end, they all couldn’t give him guarantees for this position, but they tried. They saw the big talent of Gruda.
“Liverpool were the only club from England’s Big Six who were talking with the management, but in the middle class of clubs in England there were plenty of sides who were interested in him.
“If Liverpool had been concrete for Gruda, it would have been a big challenge for Brighton to sign him.”
Do Liverpool need Gruda?
Liverpool already have Mohamed Salah, Federico Chiesa, Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo, Harvey Elliott and Luis Diaz who can operate out wide, so there’s no immediate requirement for a winger.
However, Gruda is definitely one to watch for the future.
They could have opted to sign him and loan him out for the remainder of the current campaign, which is exactly what they’ve done with Giorgi Mamardashvili after he joined Liverpool.
Brighton have a habit of finding some of the best talents in world football, so as Falk says, Liverpool will be hoping they don’t rue their decision not to pursue the youngster.
