Sean Dyche will be the most relieved man on Merseyside after Storm Darragh postponed the clash between Everton and Liverpool.
The 53-year-old is likely to depart the Blues once The Friedkin Group assumes control of the Merseyside outfit, but he has eased the growing pressure on his shoulders following the 4-0 win against Wolves on Wednesday [4 December].
However, each match is a must-win occasion for Dyche, and he has been handed an early Christmas present at Goodison Park as Storm Darragh forced the Merseyside derby [7 December] to be abandoned due to dreadful conditions in the North West.
Liverpool are one of the most in-form sides in Europe despite the 3-3 draw against Newcastle United last time out – with a quick turnaround heading into the weekend, the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park had all the makings of a banana skin contest for Dyche.
Sean Dyche has time to prepare at Everton for historic Goodison Park send-off
There are, of course, arguments for both sides as to how the postponement could affect Dyche at Everton.
Rarely do the Toffees head into the Merseyside derby off the back of a more favourable result than the side across Stanley Park, but that would have done more harm than good on this occasion.
Everton beat Liverpool 2-0 in the reverse fixture last season, three days after beating Nottingham Forest by an identical scoreline, but the fortunes at Anfield were far worse – the Reds were running out of steam in the Premier League under Jurgen Klopp – in contrast, Arne Slot has been flying-high in his maiden year in the English top flight.
Furthermore, Dyche was expected to approach the derby with a simple and potentially ineffective game plan: focus on set pieces.
This is the most historic derby for the Blue half of Merseyside, and ensuring Goodison Park enjoys the send-off that the venue deserves is of the utmost importance to the supporters; a loss would break the relationship with Dyche beyond repair.
The postponement is a blessing in disguise for Everton, and with the clash not expected to be rescheduled until after the New Year, Dyche could be in a far better position to secure the most important three points of the Goodison Park era.
