Keith Jackson believes that James Tavernier has never looked like a natural captain for Rangers amid his recent run of poor form.

The Daily Record journalist believes that Jack Butland is more suited to wear the armband for the Ibrox outfit.

With the 33-year-old being on the bench recently, Jackson wants to see the leader of the team on the pitch.

He said on 16 November: “Yes. Rangers need a leader out there on the pitch – not sitting on the bench. Tavernier has been a magnificent contributor over the years but has never seemed like a natural captain. Jack Butland seems more suited to the role.”

Rangers must not make a public mockery of James Tavernier

The captain’s armband may seem like a symbol of leadership but it often serves more administrative functions like communicating with referees, organising team huddles, and being the media spokesperson.

Leadership in football isn’t confined to the person wearing the armband and can come from within the team dynamics.

Butland, even without the official title, can exert leadership in the dressing room, through his actions on and off the pitch, by example, and through vocal encouragement.

Stripping Tavernier of the captaincy at this juncture, especially when he’s under scrutiny from fans and pundits alike, would be counterproductive and could potentially damage his confidence further.

Leadership roles can be shared and in many sides, there are multiple leaders and leadership groups.

If the club are hell-bent on making a change, they can opt for a leadership group as that’s not directly throwing Tavernier under the bus.

In other Rangers news, a key first-team player is unlikely to be at Ibrox next season after a recent revelation.
