Tom English was baffled by the scenes in the Scotland win against Croatia after Petar Sucic was sent off for a challenge on Rangers defender John Souttar.
Steve Clarke’s men hosted Croatia at Hampden Park on 15 November in the UEFA Nations League, taking the three points through a late John McGinn goal in the 1-0 win.
Writing for the BBC on 15 November, English felt the sending-off for two bookings was harsh and he was amused by the scenes that followed after the half-time whistle had gone.
“Croatia should have been a goal or two to the good but weren’t. If they were frustrated, it was nothing compared to the state they were about to get themselves.
“Sucic, on a booking, was adjudged to have barrelled into John Souttar and out came the red. It was unjust and, suddenly, Modric lost his shape.
“He shouted, he laughed sarcastically, he waved his arms in disbelief. And then he was booked. He’ll miss Portugal on Monday.
“At the break, one of his coaches stared out Grinfeeld in a slightly comedic scene. When the Croatian advanced, out came a yellow card. Pantomime stuff. Wonderful.”
Rangers delighted with John Souttar after Scotland v Croatia
Souttar showed his class against one of the best teams in the world, helping Scotland to a huge three points after a troublesome spell for the country.
While the Tartan Army were helped by the red card in the first half, there was still a long way to go for them, and they ensured Croatia had zero shots on target after the break.
The Rangers defender made seven passes into the final third for Scotland, two blocks, three clearances, one interception, five recoveries and won all seven of his duels against Zlatko Dalic’s team, as per FotMob.
Back in Glasgow, the Light Blues faithful will be delighted with the 28-year-old’s performance and hope he brings the same form back to the club.
Souttar has started in all but one match for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership this season and has been a critical player for Philippe Clement, who is under pressure at the club.
The Bears aren’t doing too well at the moment, sitting third in the league table, nine points off Celtic and Aberdeen.
Clement’s team have kept 10 clean sheets in all competitions in the current campaign, but Souttar and his teammates still need to do a lot more before regaining the faith of the Ibrox faithful.
