'Making No Sense' - Journalist view: Clement has entered 'Sacked Territory' at Rangers after what he's said

Philippe Clement has now entered “sacked territory” at Rangers and is no longer making any sense, according to Gordon Parks.

The Daily Record journalist said on PLZ Soccer’s The Journos on 5 September that the Belgian’s new contract means he won’t be removed from his post as things stand, but in the current context of the team’s performances and his own behaviour it is getting close because Old Firm bosses don’t get time.

Clement drew criticism in the wake of the 3-0 loss at Celtic for highlighting the 6-0 victory a week earlier of Ross County [Daily Record, 1 September], and that sort of line leads Parks to claim the manager is now “making no sense”.

He said (13m 30s): “He has got pedigree and when he first came in articulate and spoke a good game, but he’s in sacked territory… if there’s no time he must be close…

“He’s got a new contract [so] it’s not going to happen. But you speak to Rangers fans, they are not convinced now. And he is now making no sense when he’s trying to dissect [performances].”

Rangers boss cites Ross County win after Celtic defeat

At this stage a year ago the writing was probably on the wall for Michael Beale, and Giovanni van Bronckhorst reached a similar point a year before that.

But the damage of the repeated hiring and firing at Ibrox is part of what has led Clement into this situation after a transfer window where he couldn’t afford to make all the signings he wanted and struggled to offload expensive misfits from a squad made in the image of multiple managers.

The Belgian certainly deserves some understanding for the near-impossible position he finds himself in as a result of failings that preceded his arrival in Glasgow, and the club have already made a decision on sacking him at this stage [The Herald, 27 July].

But even within his own tenure the side seems to be going backwards, with his own signings such as Mohamed Diomande seemingly regressing just as the likes of Todd Cantwell did for Beale before him.

Clement seemed like a man who had no time for nonsense when he replaced the bombast and sales patter of his predecessor last term.

But as the wheels have started to come off he has lost that air of control and has arguably started to sound more like Beale did towards the end of his term.

It can’t be forgotten than he reversed the decline last season, won a trophy, and put his side in position to win a shock treble.

But the drop off after reaching that point has been alarming, and while he is far from the only one to blame he is drawing more doubts in his own direction.
