Manchester City have recorded a solid set of financial results for 2023-24 despite their wage bill remaining high at more than £412million.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that figure is only slightly down on the £422.9million the club paid out in their treble-winning season the previous year.
The Premier League champions revealed their 2023-24 accounts on 13 December, showing their revenue increased by £2.2million to a club record £715million.
Man City’s commercial revenue also rose from £341.4million to £344.7million across the period, while their wage bill stood at £412.6million and they recorded a pre-tax profit of £73.8million.
Pep Guardiola’s side made history last season after becoming the first English club to win four top-flight titles in a row.
Man City have recorded high wage bill after accounts revealed
“Given that the comparative year was the treble season and winning the Champions League, they are a good set of results in the top line,” Borson told Football Insider.
“The wage bill is still quite high at £412million, so it’s slightly down on the treble year.
“There will have been huge savings on bonuses that were paid in the treble year but were not this year.
“But £412million is still a very big wage bill.
“They have increased their headcount by 90 people across commercial and footballing operations.
“That’s about an increase of 18 per cent in headcount, so that will contribute some of the offsetting of the savings that are made from the bonuses.
“But the wage bill is still high.
“Performances are pretty solid. They would probably still want to generate more money from matchday revenue.
“Commercial and broadcast revenues are still attractive, so they are a good set of results.”
