Rangers captain James Tavernier “doesn’t look happy” at Ibrox and a last-minute exit would fit the Gers’ transfer model, according to Hugh Keevins.
Reports suggest that the Light Blues are now ready to accept offers for the 32-year-old amid interest from clubs in both Turkey and Qatar despite rejecting offers earlier this summer [Graeme Bailey, 6 September]
Although Daily Record Keevins has been astonished by the criticism directed at the Englishman in the wake of the defeat to Celtic, he admits that a move away from Ibrox would make sense if the right offer was made.
Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (6 September) he said: “I’ve rarely seen anyone get the kind of criticism that he’s received since last season ended.
“He has been slated by the Rangers fans and there was the unfortunate scene outside Ibrox last Sunday where he was targeted by the people who were waiting for the Rangers bus to come back from Celtic Park.
“He doesn’t look like a happy person anymore. You go back to the argument that the numbers he has for a fullback are incredible, but he doesn’t win enough trophies for a Rangers captain.
“He doesn’t look happy, but I don’t know how it ends. If we take Philippe Clement at face value, if Turkey and Qatar can provide Clement will sufficient money to go into a transfer market that hasn’t closed yet and a transfer window that hasn’t closed yet in another country, that would fit the profile.
“But it is astonishing. He is the Rangers captain and he is now being slammed by Rangers supporters.”
Will James Tavernier exit Rangers amid Ibrox transfer rumours?
As Keevins suggests, it doesn’t seem as though Tavernier is happy to be a Gers player anymore and that could well be a sign that his race is run under Clement.
The Belgian wants a squad full of players committed to the cause at Ibrox and while there has been an insistence from within the club that the Englishman remains driven to succeed in Glasgow, that hasn’t been on display on the pitch.
If the right offer arrives for the right-back in the coming days, the Gers would simply have to accept it, particularly as they appear to have a ready-made replacement waiting in the wings in Dujon Sterling.
It will be interesting to see whether or not a move does happen before the transfer window closes in both Turkey and Qatar.
After the defeat at Parkhead, it does feel as though a last-minute exit could be the best course of action for everyone involved.
