Man United Exclusive: Big update on De Ligt as player responds

Man United have made Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt a key target for the summer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Erik ten Hag will remain in his post for the 2024-25 campaign and the former Ajax boss is eyeing a reunion with the 24-year-old this summer.

United saw an initial bid for Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite rejected earlier in the window, with the Red Devils only presenting a first offer of around £35million plus add-ons.

It is believed Branthwaite is valued by the Merseyside club at around £70-80million following his stellar 2023-24 campaign.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that De Ligt is now seen as a more attainable target for United as they plan their first summer signing.

Central defence is seen as a key area by club chiefs after the free transfer departure of Raphael Varane in recent days.

It is believed Bayern are open to selling the Netherlands international, while sources say the player himself is keen to move to Old Trafford and reunite with Ten Hag.

De Ligt is currently at the European Championships in Germany with his international side but is yet to play a minute for his country in the competition.

He made 30 appearances across all competitions in the 2023-24 campaign, with a knee ligament tear restricting his action for Bayern Munich as they missed out on the Bundesliga title.

The 6ft 2in defender shot to fame at Ajax after breaking through as a 17-year-old and captained the club just a year later.
