Man United are expected to sack Erik ten Hag “by Christmas” if he does not oversee a big turnaround in the team’s fortunes, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that, if results don’t significantly improve before the turn of the year, the board are expected to pull the trigger.
Sources revealed that should United find themselves slipping away from the top-four race at Christmas, a decision will have to be made.
Following the 1-1 draw with FC Twente, United have won just three of their eight games so far this season, ramping up the scrutiny on Ten Hag’s job.
However, sources also say the decision-makers at Old Trafford are keen to give him time, having handed him a new contract in the summer.
The decision to award the boss with a new deal following the FA Cup victory against Man City led to extensive financial backing which has backed the board into a corner over their decision.
Man United could sack Erik ten Hag by Christmas in new update
United’s disappointing results so far this season have allowed tension at Old Trafford to increase both amongst fans and on the board.
There is a growing feeling that a significant turnaround in results will be needed for the boss to save his future at the club, but questions continue to rise about whether that will be possible.
Following impressive 3-0 and 7-0 wins against Southampton and Barnsley respectively, Ten Hag had been backed to find an improved run of form.
Since then, however, his side have drawn 0-0 with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, and 1-1 with Twente at Old Trafford, with no further improvement in sight.
Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on 24 September that the club have already turned their attention to Newcastle boss Eddie Howe as an option to replace Ten Hag.
Man United will face Tottenham at Old Trafford on 29 September, before trips to Porto and Aston Villa, in what could be a crucial run of games for Ten Hag.
In other news, United fans have begun to turn on Bruno Fernandes after his display v Twente.
