Man United star duo could be the first to be sold as overhaul begins - O'Rourke

Manchester United need to sell players to generate funds for any potential new signings this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed Man United don’t have a “massive” budget and INEOS are going to have to be savvy about the way they operate in the upcoming transfer window.

The Premier League giants are believed to be prioritising signing a new centre-back, a central defensive midfielder and a striker to help share the load with Rasmus Hojlund.

Football Insider revealed on 4 June that Jarrad Branthwaite, Gleison Bremer and Jean-Clair Todibo make up a three-man shortlist of potential options at centre-back.

O’Rourke suggested Brazilian duo Casemiro, 32, and Antony, 24, could be the first stars sold to help boost the transfer kitty in what he believes is a “big” summer for the new regime at Old Trafford.

Man United could sell Casemiro to fund summer signings

Football Insider revealed in April that Casemiro earns a weekly wage of £450,000 and Man United are keen to move him on once the transfer window reopens.

The highly-decorated midfielder endured a difficult second season at Old Trafford, where he was forced to play the final few games of the campaign at centre-back due to their defensive crisis.

The Brazilian wouldn’t be the only high-profile player to exit the club this summer after Rafael Varane’s departure has already been confirmed ahead of his contract expiring later this month.

Antony could also be heading out of the door after registering just one goal and one assist in 29 Premier League appearances across the past campaign.

Reports have suggested Man United are now willing to sell the majority of their first-team players as Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks to overhaul the squad.

But it’s still unclear who will be in charge of the team beyond this summer after Football Insider revealed on 2 June the club’s hierarchy could make a “massive” U-turn on their previous plans to sack Erik ten Hag by handing him another opportunity next season.
