Man Utd’s stance on making Ruud van Nistelrooy their new manager
The United legend is waiting in the wings.
Ruud van Nistelrooy is considered a ‘viable short-term option’ to replace Erik ten Hag if Manchester United decide to make a change in the dugout.
Ten Hag is under mounting pressure after Sunday’s dismal defeat to Tottenham – their second 3-0 defeat at home on the bounce after being dismantled by Liverpool four weeks ago.
Ten Hag retains the backing of the club’s hierarchy for now and will remain in charge for games against Porto and Aston Villa this week. But the Dutchman is in desperate need of a positive reaction with concern rife through the club.
Should results not swiftly improve, United feel they have a short-term option to take the reins in club legend van Nistelrooy.
Van Nistelrooy returned to Old Trafford this summer, working alongside ten Hag as his countryman’s assistant manager.
The former striker had previously served as PSV Eindhoven head coach, resigning form that post at the end of the 2022-23 season after he felt unsatisfied with the level of support he received from the board.
ESPN report United’s hierarchy, led by CEO Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth, believe they are well-prepared for any changes with van Nistelrooy viewed as a possible short-term option ready to step in.
The 48-year-old would also have the support of his fellow assistant Rene Hake, who left his role as head coach at Go Ahead Eagles to join ten Hag’s staff in the summer.
Van Nistelrooy spent five years at United as a player, scoring 150 goals in 219 appearances for the club.
United chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford spoke to a number of different managers in the summer before sticking with ten Hag, triggering a contract extension to keep him at Old Trafford.
Thomas Tuchel was among those interviewed for the role with Gareth Southgate also thought to be admired.
United face trips to Porto and Villa this week before October’s international break.
