Martin Keown reacts to Everton player display in Euro 2024 today

Martin Keown has criticised Vitalii Mykolenko for his Everton performances after what he did in Ukraine’s EURO 2024 clash against Belgium.

The Toffees full back started his first game of the international tournament before being substituted for Oleksandr Zinchenko on 58 minutes.

Keown, who was co-commentating for BBC Sport, has suggested that he played at a higher level than he had done at Goodison Park.

He said: “He’s certainly played with more aggression than I’ve seen him playing for Everton this season.”

It will be of great frustration that he was taken off so early on in the clash with Arsenal star, Zinchenko replacing him with over half an hour remaining.

Keown has been criticised for his comments by Everton fans on social media who have stuck up for their left back and his performances.

He did show aggression for his country against Belgium but it may not be fair criticism given that he has performed well for Everton recently.

Across the first half of the campaign under Sean Dyche, he was up there with one of the Toffees’ best players until he got injured.

Behind Dwight McNeil on the left-hand side, it wasn’t integral that he bounded forward at every opportunity but that doesn’t go against him.

His defensive work and desire are what make him a fan favourite at Goodison Park and probably deserved more minutes at the EUROs this summer.

In other Everton news, the Toffees have made an approach to sign a midfielder at a side that recently won the Champions League.
