Alasdair Lamont is “torn” about whether Rangers should relieve Philippe Clement of his managerial duties.
The Gers currently sit third in the Scottish Premiership and are 11 points adrift of league leaders Celtic, as well as being nine points off of second-placed Aberdeen.
Writing for the BBC Sport website (27 November), journalist Lamont shared his thoughts on where the future of the Belgian should lie.
“The manager’s position feels like the tip of the iceberg, with boardroom upheaval and fan unrest pervasive throughout his year or so in charge,” he wrote.
“Those extenuating circumstances do not entirely excuse the Belgian’s inability to maintain the initial upturn in Rangers’ footballing fortunes, but they have to be considered when judging him.
“I am still torn over the wisdom and practicalities of changing manager yet again. The expense involved (can Rangers afford to sack Clement or can they afford not to sack him is an interesting debate) not to mention the tumult that inevitably follows is massively unhelpful.
“Though few Rangers fans appear to agree, I would suggest that a period of patience and the stability that might come with the new executive appointments would be more beneficial than starting from scratch once more.”
John Gilligan needs to decide about future of Philippe Clement at Rangers
As most fans will know, the club are quite in the trenches when it comes to their finances. Their money troubles are likely one of the main reasons why not all that much was spent on improving the team in the summer.
There were likely many targets that the Gers wanted to bring in but couldn’t due to the amount it would cost them.
However, it finally feels like things are coming back together at Ibrox as the club have announced the arrival of Patrick Stewart as their new CEO.
Although the news of behind-the-scenes movement being made will likely be music to most fans’ ears, that doesn’t excuse the fact that John Gilligan hasn’t yet decided on the future of Clement.
There are so many questions still flying around Ibrox regarding where the future is going to take the Gers, but at the moment, the best move for the club feels like it would be to part ways with the Belgian and start afresh.
