Phil McNulty doesn’t believe Lee Carsley will be a replacement for Sean Dyche as Everton manager but thinks he might be an option in the future.
Carsley has just finished a stint as England interim manager where he won five of his six Nations League games before handing the reins to new boss Thomas Tuchel.
Dyche is in the final year of his contract and has faced scrutiny over his future with the Toffees, and the question of whether England Under-21 boss Carsley could take over from Dyche was put to BBC Sport journalist McNulty.
Replying on the BBC Sport website (19 November), he wrote about the former Everton midfielder’s chances: “Given Everton’s plight, it would also be a huge task for any manager, particularly one who hasn’t managed full-time at club level,” he wrote.
“Carsley may well have had an unblemished record as England’s interim manager had it not been for a reckless selection gamble that backfired against Greece at Wembley, but he fulfilled his remit in restoring them to the top-tier of the Nations League, while giving youth players their chance.
“The standard of opposition must always be taken into account, but there is a lot for Carsley to be proud of.
“Everton manager? Not now, but maybe at some time in the future. As we know, he was a highly respected player and personality during his time at the club”.
Lee Carsley isn’t the right man for the Everton hot seat
Carsley may well have been very respected during his time with Everton but it still feels far too soon for him to be getting linked with a job as prestigious as the one at Goodison Park.
He had a fairly solid stint as the interim England manager but as he said himself, he was looking forward to getting back with the Under-21s.
Several managers such as Gareth Southgate and Everton legend David Moyes have been linked with taking over from Dyche but at the moment nothing is set in stone.
And while the takeover is still going smoothly, it feels like even when The Friedkin Group do takeover the Merseyside outfit, there will likely be more pressing matters for them to deal with away from their manager.
The January transfer window is just around the corner and as long as the takeover process is completed before the end of the year as expected, that’ll no doubt take priority over other matters.
