Medical booked this morning as Everton player ready for new transfer - report

Everton defender Ben Godfrey is set to undergo his medical for his move to Atalanta on Friday morning, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Italian journalist took to X on 28 June and detailed that following rumours of his move, the final stages are now setting into place.

This comes after the 26-year-old has had a deal agreed for his transfer to the current Europa League Champions.

Why Everton are letting Ben Godfrey depart the club

Godfrey’s preferred move was to the Serie A [Dharmesh Sheth, 27 June] after spending the last couple of seasons battling injuries and selection issues.

Despite many expecting the defender to consistently break into the Toffees’ starting side at some point, it evidently wasn’t meant to be.

A move to Italy is arguably one of the best moves the defender can make, especially to Atalanta.

Thanks to their surprise win in the Europa League last season, the Bergamo club are one of the many teams representing Italy in the Champions League.

The opportunity to play at the highest level of European football is something too good for Godfrey to turn down which gives reason behind the move.

This is despite the fact that Jarrad Branthwaite could be on his way out of Everton himself [Daily Mail, 23 June] which could’ve offered Godfrey more game time.

But, when it becomes a choice between the Champions League and no European football at all, it’s clear why he’s chosen to leave Merseyside.
