Medical now complete for new Rangers signing - Chris Jack

Liam Kelly has completed his Rangers medical ahead of his summer transfer to join the ranks at Ibrox, according to Chris Jack.

The Rangers Review journalist reported on Thursday (27 June) that the Scottish stopper is set to return to Glasgow having completed his tests with just his signature needed to get the deal over the line.

Kelly is expected to act as a backup for first-choice keeper Jack Butland next season following the release of Jon McLaughlin and Robby McCrorie’s decision to depart in search of regular first-team football away from Ibrox.

The former Motherwell man will be Philippe Clement’s fourth signing of the summer as he continues to reshape his squad having missed out on the title to Celtic last season.

Kelly is unlikely to be the most exciting addition made at Ibrox this summer, but it is another step in the right direction for Clement and his side as they look to revolutionise this squad and close the gap to Celtic at the top.

He isn’t expected to come in and immediately force Butland out of his starting role, but he is an experienced campaigner who will add some know-how to the changing room which could be incredibly important in the title race.

Should Butland depart, he may well have to step up and perform but you would imagine that the Gers would look to replace the Englishman if he were to leave this summer. Either way, it would be a surprise to see much of Kelly in action.

Hopefully, an announcement will emerge from the club sooner rather than later and then Clement and his team can return to securing deals for one or two more exiting players ahead of the start of pre-season.
