Medical now underway: Player set to undergo formalities to quit Everton for good - report

Amadou Onana has arrived in Birmingham for his Aston Villa medical as he prepares to leave Everton, according to Sacha Tavolieri.

Belgian journalist Tavolieri reported via his X account on Sunday morning [21 July] that Onana had met up with Villa officials to complete a £50m deal.

The formalities are now being finalised after the deal was agreed earlier in the week, with Everton set to receive the hefty sum which will now be even more significant following the collapse of the proposed takeover by Dan Friedkin.

Tavolieri’s post read: “Amadou Onana today in Birmingham and currently doing his medical tests, after [which] he will do the usual formalities and sign officially as a Aston Villa Football Club player.

“As explained two days ago, the official announcement [is] scheduled on Monday.”

Everton sale of Onana very nearly complete

Should all go ahead as planned, Onana will be an Everton player for only a matter of hours longer.

Speaking without sentiment, the deal would have appeared to work well for the Toffees even before the Friedkin Group takeover fell through, as it meant the club were likely to hold onto Jarrad Branthwaite amid intense advances from Manchester United.

The Belgian midfielder has enjoyed a short break following his exploits with the national team at Euro 2024 and will now achieve his lifelong dream of playing in the Champions League for Unai Emery’s side, and Sean Dyche could possibly be able to reinvest some of the fee in key areas of his squad unit.

The frustration for Dyche will not so much be losing Onana as being unsure on how much of the funding he can plough back into the squad, in order to avoid another gruelling relegation battle – with or without the fresh administration fears plaguing Goodison Park.

Everton must now continue to do everything in their power to keep the rest of their indispensable key assets, but uncertainty looms.
