Michael Gannon believes signing Ryan Kent on a free transfer would be a huge gamble for Rangers.
Kent has been linked with a surprise return to Ibrox after terminating his contract at Fenerbahce by mutual consent last week [Scottish Sun].
Although Gannon thinks the Gers need to consider bringing in a new left winger in January, the journalist warned the club against re-signing Kent on £20,000-a-week+ wages.
“He [Philippe Clement] will need to see what kind of dosh he’s got to spend and where he wants to splash it”, Gannon wrote in his Sunday Mail (20 October, page 58) column.
“The Belgian is still light in terms of muscle in the middle of the park but that wide-left role is an area that will need attention.
“Oscar Cortes remains an unknown due to his injuries and Rabbi Matondo continues to be a frustrating enigma.
“But Rangers coughing up £20k-plus a week on Kent after more than two seasons of barely kicking a ball looks like a gamble they can’t really afford.
“Some memories – good and bad – are best left in the past.”
Ryan Kent linked with surprise Ibrox return with Rangers
Gannon saying Kent has barely kicked a ball in more than two seasons is exaggerated as the Englishman racked up 44 appearances for Rangers in the 2022-23 season before joining Fenerbahce on a free transfer that summer.
However, the Daily Record journalist is not wrong in saying that signing the 27-year-old would be a huge game for Philippe Clement’s side even though he is available for free.
The move to Fenerbahce did not go according to plan for Kent as he clocked just 622 minutes of playing time across all competitions last term.
Jose Mourinho’s arrival as the club’s new manager ahead of the current season also did not help the winger, with his only appearance coming in the Turkish club’s 4-3 win against Lugano in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers in July.
Having already fallen six points behind Celtic and Aberdeen – albeit with a game in hand, Rangers need to be careful with their every move and signing Kent could prove to be a mistake.
Like Gannon, Mark Guidi is also sceptical about the Gers signing Kent, saying that the club should not break their wage structure to bring him back to Ibrox.
In other Rangers news, this player has been backed to be the next Light Blues captain after James Tavernier.
