Michael Stewart makes Rangers jibe as he makes new prediction

Michael Stewart took a cheap shot at Rangers when predicting if Aberdeen could close the gap in the Scottish Premiership this season.

The Gers are currently five points adrift from Celtic and Aberdeen at the top of the table, who are joint on 15 points, having drawn one game and lost another of their five matches so far.

The last time Celtic and Rangers failed to take the top two spots in the Scottish Premiership was during the 2017/18 campaign when the Dons finished in second, three points above the Gers.

Speaking via the Scottish Football Social Club on Monday (16 September), Stewart joked with Alan Hutton: “It’s not close because Aberdeen are second and a good few points in front.

“I think Rangers will finish second at the moment. I do think that the gap will be tighter or closer than it was last season when Hearts finished third.”

Aberdeen to finish above Rangers in the Scottish Premiership?

Considering the Light Blues’ start to the 2024/25 campaign, losing to their bitter rivals and being knocked out of Champions League qualifying, fans might not be totally surprised if Aberdeen took advantage.

If this were to happen, however, Philippe Clement’s tenure would certainly be in jeopardy after a mountain of criticism so far this season. It would be a new low for the Belgian.

The “gulf” between the Gers and the Hoops was discussed after the 3-0 defeat at Celtic Park at the beginning of September, and Clement’s side already look to be slipping out of contention for the league title.

While there have been positive signs shown by the Scottish giants, especially in the 6-0 win over Ross County, they most recently struggled to convince against newly promoted Dundee United.

Some dubbed the game a must-win just five games into the new season, and with Celtic and Aberdeen unbeaten so far, it could be a rather long season for Clement and his team if the current trend continues.

In other Rangers news, Gary Keown has backed the Gers to make an “outside” hire after a John Bennett development.
