'Not the way' - Kris Boyd slams August behind-scenes Rangers sacking in new chairman verdict

Rangers must appoint the best person for the chairman’s job whether they have a history with the club or not, insists Kris Boyd.

The Sky Sports pundit told Roger Hannah for the Scottish Suns’ Go Ballistic show on 16 September that a recent firing of a new appointment showed the organisation has not been run properly and highlighted the need for due diligence to be done in advance.

He would have been referring to the controversial brief stint of Blaine McConnell as head of marketing [4 Lads Had A Dream, 14 August], which was quickly downgraded to a “short-term consultancy” when the Celtic supporter was let go just two days later [FollowFollow, 14 August].

Boyd said on the process to replace John Bennett after his resignation for health reasons (11m 40s): “Get the best person for the job. Whether he’s a Rangers man or he’s not a Rangers man, get the best person for the job.

“There been so much [an] air of negativity, even within Ibrox, regarding some positions that have been filled over the past period of time.

“You only need to go back a few months ago there was somebody started then sacked, removed from the roll, after looking below the bonnet basically and seeing other things that had been on in the person’s life before hand.

“That’s not the way that a proper organisation is run. You do your due diligence on people before you go and get [them] and as I said, get the best person for the job. Rangers Football Club is a worldwide organisation, people know the pressures that come with it, but it will be attractive for somebody out there.”

Kris Boyd blasts Blaine McConnell hiring and firing at Rangers

John Gilligan has got his work cut out after stepping in unexpectedly with Bennett’s exit, as he has to find a new chairman to take his temporary role while the club continue their search for a new CEO.

Bennett was close to appointing St Mirren’s Jim Gillespie to fill the gap suddenly left by James Bisgrove but the Gers supporter pulled out late in the process despite talks reaching an advanced stage [Daily Mail, 10 September].

But the McConnell episode won’t inspire huge confidence that the right processes are in place to get the most suitable option in.

The Light Blues should arguably not have any options off the table given how badly they need help, but if the genuine “best person” for one of the top jobs turned out to have been previously linked with Celtic it would give them a decision to make.

But with McConnell the swift sacking in the wake of a fan backlash suggested the club didn’t even know and weren’t prepared for the reaction.

Dave King is a Rangers man and has put himself forward for a two-year spell back as chairman in order to see the Light Blues out of a chaotic situation.

He says there is investment interest in the club and has talked up money coming in from Saudi Arabia and the US [Rangers Review, 15 September] so he could be the right man.

In other Rangers news, an “important” update on whether Bennett is due to take his money out of the club has come out after his resignation.
