Michael Stewart questions Clement after what he has heard about Dessers at Rangers

Michael Stewart has heard that Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers did want to take a penalty in the Scottish Cup final loss to Celtic.

The Nigerian forward did not step up in the controversial 5-4 penalty shoot-out loss to the Hoops on Sunday (15 December).

Ridvan Yilmaz and goalkeeper Jack Butland stepped up to take two pressure penalties, and Stewart has questioned why Philippe Clement did not clear it up.

Speaking live on BBC Sportsound [21 December, 17:44], he said: “When I heard that, I’m then thinking to myself, should the manager have come out and spoken about how it was his decision?

“But then probably quickly the focus turns onto.. ‘Okay, so you think the goalkeeper and left-back are better options than the striker’.”

Cyriel Dessers to leave Rangers

The 30-year-old’s time at Ibrox is surely coming to an end in January after the shock incident against Celtic.

The former Genk striker was sixth on the list of penalty takers according to Clement, which led to criticism from Keith Jackson [Daily Record, 17 December]

Whether that was the manager’s decision or the player’s, it is an unacceptable one and that will be hard to stomach for Rangers supporters.

Dessers has been linked with an exit from the Light Blues in recent weeks and that is likely because the incident in the final shows that Clement does not have faith in his number nine.

The form of Hamza Igamane has left the Nigerian on the fridges of Clement’s pecking order in the number nine role.

It is probably best for all parties if he moves on in the January transfer window.

In other Rangers news, Kris Boyd was amazed by what he saw in the Gers 1-0 win against Dundee.
