Ibrox View: Rangers to fast-track summer exit for star after new Clement transfer admission

Rangers supporters have quickly grown frustrated with the lack of movement both in and out of Ibrox in the last few weeks of the transfer window.

After a busy start that saw the likes of Clinton Nsiala and Connor Barron arrive in Glasgow and players like John Lundstram and Borna Barisic depart, it has all gone quiet as the Premiership season draws closer.

It would appear that the lack of new signings is directly related to the absence of any big-money departures, with Philippe Clement now admitting the Gers have to sell before they can buy in this transfer window.

As quoted by the Heart and Hand podcast on X (13 July) Clement said: “That’s the reality that the board told me a few months ago. I know this, and the recruitment team knows this also.

“This is the reality of the club. I had other expectations when I came in October, I have to say. But I know the reality now. I am very motivated to build the club and help in that.

“It’s focusing not only on the short term but also on the long term. If I only looked at the short term I would only bring in experienced players who can do the job directly.

“Mistakes like that have been made too much in the past and at the end, you don’t reach your goals. You need a different philosophy and that’s what we are all working towards. This is a massive rebuilding job, it is true.’’

Will James Tavernier exit Rangers after new Philippe Clement transfer admission?

There aren’t many players in this Gers team currently who are worth loads of money, but one man who could earn the Light Blues a reasonable transfer fee is Rangers skipper James Tavernier.

Although the Englishman had a difficult season last term as he was criticised by fans and pundits alike, his goalscoring record means he will always garner plenty of attention from clubs all around the world.

Saudi club Al-Qadsiah are the latest to be linked with the right-back’s signature with reports suggesting they are keen on his services having signed former Real Madrid defender Nacho [Scottish Sun, 4 July].

Rangers are only expected to sanction the sale of Tavernier if they receive a big bid this summer and Al-Qadsiah are certainly financially equipped to make that sort of offer in the coming weeks.

Any money raised by his sale could then be re-invested back into Clement’s squad as he looks to make one or two further additions to try and close the gap to Celtic at the top of the Premiership.

With the Rangers boss now admitting he has to sell before buying this summer, it wouldn’t be a shock to see the Light Blues’ fast-track Tavernier sale sooner rather than later.
