Michael Stewart has raised concerns over the lack of mentality and character in the Rangers squad after the 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock.
The Gers travelled to Rugby Park to take on Derek McInnes’ team in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday 20 October, and an 87th-minute goal by Marley Watkins was enough for the hosts to take the three points.
Subsequently, alarm bells were raised regarding Philippe Clement’s team, and when asked on BBC Scotland [20 October] whether the Ibrox side had gotten worse since last year, Stewart concurred with the assessment.
“I don’t think there’s any question that they’re not as strong as they were last season,” he said.
“You look at the leaders, characters that have left, that are no longer at the club, then yes, they are a weaker side.
“Obviously, the players that have come in, they will need to take a bit of time to try to get up to speed. But I think the concerning thing is not just about their ability, it’s the actual mentality and the character that’s lacking in that Rangers side at the moment.”
Rangers loss to Kilmarnock no surprise
Kilmarnock looked the better side, creating the better opportunities, and Rangers’ vulnerability at the back was evident throughout the game, with Jack Butland saving his teammates on several occasions.
The home team controlled most of the match in the first half, and while the Gers found some semblance after the break, they were punished towards the end of the game after making several errors in defence.
In the summer, the Bears let go of some experienced players such as Sam Lammers, Todd Cantwell, John Lundstram, Scott Wright and Borna Barisic.
However, the Light Blues did make some decent purchases, adding the likes of Nedim Bajrami, Robin Propper, Hamza Igamane, Jefte and Vaclav Cerny to their ranks.
Unfortunately, Clement has been unable to get the best of the squad at his disposal, with the lack of experience at leading a side at the top shining through.
Something needs to change, and it needs to happen quickly.
