Martin O’Neill has urged Philippe Clement to forget about his style of play at Rangers and focus on getting results for the time being.
The Gers lost 1-0 at Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership on 20 October after an 87th-minute goal by Marley Watkins sealed the victory for Derek McInnes.
It marked Clement’s second loss of the season in just eight league fixtures, and speaking on talkSPORT [21 October, 11:55], O’Neill has told the Belgian to get the best out of the players at his disposal.
“Well, they’re not good enough. That’s fine. But you have to, as a manager, try and get the very, very best out of them,” he said.
“You have to eke out results, and until you get a clear pattern about your team, about the way they want to play, just hang in there. Go and win the game. And no matter how ugly it might be, go and win.”
Marin O’Neill is right about Rangers boss Philippe Clement
Rangers have been unstable in recent years due to managerial uncertainty, and with the arrival of Clement, fans had hoped for things to change.
Poor performances marred Michael Beale’s time at the club, and the results reflected that.
However, while the team has performed better under the former Monaco boss, they are still unable to get over the line in matches.
The Ibrox faithful saw an example of this against Lyon, where the Light Blues had standout players and created opportunities in the opening stages but eventually lost 4-1.
Therefore, it’s clear that Clement should focus on making the Bears defensively resolute to get better results at the club.
Celtic and Aberdeen played out a draw and dropped points, which gave Rangers the impetus to close the gap with a win over Kilmarnock.
Unfortunately, they failed to do so, and if things stay the same, it won’t be long before questions are raised regarding a change in the dugout and the boardroom at Ibrox.
