Chris Sutton shares new Clement sack verdict as Rangers fans backed to demand Ibrox exit

Rangers fans will be demanding that Philippe Clement is sacked outside Ibrox in the near future, according to Chris Sutton.

Pressure is mounting on the Gers manager in Glasgow following the Light Blues’ disappointing 1-0 defeat against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Sunday (20 October).

Although Sky Sports pundit Sutton doesn’t believe changing the manager will solve all of the Gers’ problems on and off the field, he thinks the supporters have the power to get the Belgian sacked.

Speaking on It’s All Kicking Off (21 October, 26:40) he said: “It was interesting because at the game yesterday I don’t know if you saw the Rangers fans with the banner, no director of football, no chief executive and that they were being mismanaged.

“I think one of the lines was about a scapegoat and I think that scapegoat was referring to Philippe Clement. I do think Rangers fans, some have even got to the stage where it is just sheer apathy now, it’s that bad and they can’t see the team really progressing.

“The issue is and I always thought this was the issue, giving Philippe Clement the new contract at the start of the season, that was a display of unity to try and show that everybody was together at the club.

“But if they go and sack him now when we’re not many games into the season, what is the new manager going to come in and say?

“He’s going to come in and say with all these new players that have been recruited, these players aren’t good enough, I want another £20million, £30million to spend, I need to bring my own players in.

“Eventually, there has to be a line drawn under it. But I know it’s fans who get managers the sack and there will be a day in the near future if results don’t improve at Rangers where there will be thousands of fans standing outside Ibrox demanding that Philippe Clement gets the sack.

“When that happens, he will get the sack.”

As Sutton suggests, it is the fans who tend to get managers sacked at both Old Firm clubs. While the support remains divided on Clement, if enough fans call for a change in the dugout, it will happen.

While the new contract at the start of this season was a demonstration of unity between the club and the manager, it isn’t worth the paper it is written on. If the Light Blues decide to make a change, they still can.

Results need to improve and they need to improve quickly if Clement wants to keep his job at Ibrox. His side missed a golden chance to close the gap to Celtic at the top of the table on Sunday and that simply cannot happen in Glasgow.

Hopefully, Clement will manage to find a way to turn things around and quickly so that the Gers can claw their way back into the title race and remain competitive in Europe. If he doesn’t, he will almost certainly pay with his job.
