Bryan King is “surprised” by the transfer fee agreed between Tottenham and Olympique de Marseille for Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.

The ex-Spurs scout feels as though the French outfit have got the better deal of the two clubs.

As reported by Dharmesh Sheth via X (21 July), the total fee for Højbjerg’s transfer is worth up to £16.9million.

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – feels Daniel Levy has allowed the midfielder to leave as an act of goodwill.

“This is a better deal for Marseille I would think,” King said.

“De Zerbi obviously feels as though Højbjerg will be a useful addition to the squad. I am surprised because he has been a good utility player for Tottenham.

“He isn’t young anymore, but when you see some of the fees in football, I’d say Marseille have got quite a good deal here.

“It must be a bit of a thank-you from the club and Levy. Højbjerg has given Tottenham decent service and it feels like this is the right time for him to move.

“You could see that Ange Postecoglou wasn’t 100 per cent set on him. He wasn’t a regular starter, but when he did play, he did well.”

Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg to join Olympique de Marseille

It felt inevitable that Højbjerg would leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

With just one year left on his contract, there was little chance of the 28-year-old putting pen to paper on a new deal.

After several years as a first-team regular, the Dane fell out of favour under Postecoglou.

Therefore, a transfer was best for all parties, and the relatively low fee suggests that there was a willingness on all sides to get a deal agreed upon.

In other Tottenham news, the club have been backed to agree a cut-price deal for a £60million-rated forward.
