Andy Newport insists “more alarm bells” should be ringing for Rangers and Philippe Clement after their 1-0 loss against Kilmarnock on Sunday (20 October).

The Gers had the chance to cut the points deficit between themselves, Celtic and Aberdeen in half but failed to capitalise on the golden opportunity.

Newport was left stunned by the Gers’ poor performance and shared his verdict on how fans of the club must be feeling.

“From a Rangers point of view, wow, I mean just yet another game where they’re devoid of any sort of fluency, any sort of style, decisiveness, none of that on show,” Newport said on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (20 October).

“There’s going to be more alarm bells ringing for Philippe Clement and his team. Obviously the Rangers fans are a fairly frustrated bunch right now, and they made their feelings clear with the banner display.”

Rangers and Philippe Clement need to get their act together

Rangers have massively underperformed this season. Clement’s men were expected to mount a real title challenge this term but are instead trailing in the shadows of their bitter rivals Celtic once again.

Granted, this latest loss was the first time in their last four Scottish Premiership clashes that they failed to come away with a victory, but Kilmarnock should be a team that Rangers easily overcome.

The fact that Cyriel Dessers has lost his shooting boots lately hasn’t helped matters much, with the Nigeria international going five games without hitting the back of the net.

Of course, not all the blame can be placed upon the shoulders of the 29-year-old, but when your first-choice striker can’t score then you’re doomed to fail.

Robin Propper is another player who needs to get his act together sharpish. Kilmarnock talisman Kyle Vassell dominated the Dutchman throughout the clash and allowed the striker to wreak havoc on the Gers’ defensive line.

Things need to turn around at Ibrox soon, otherwise the Gers could find themselves as the laughing stocks of the Scottish Premiership.
