Aston Villa captain Tyrone Mings isn’t a guaranteed starter once he returns from his devastating ACL injury that kept him out for last season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton admits it’s ‘going to be difficult’ for the 31-year-old to break back into the squad.

Mings has played a huge role for Villa since his move from Bournemouth back in 2018-19 but has been out of action for 305 days due to his latest injury.

With the likes of Ezri Konsa, Pau Torres, and Diego Carlos helping carry the club to Champions League qualification for the first time since 1982-83, Mings now faces serious competition.

Tyrone Mings will need to work hard to earn Aston Villa place

The English defender has made 150 appearances for Aston Villa since making his move to the midlands permanent.

Mings could potentially return to action by the end of September as Villa hope to continue the good work done last season.

“Of course it’s going to be difficult,” Hutton told Football Insider.

“I’ve played alongside him, I know what he’s like, his character, he works extremely hard. He’s a leader, I remember not that long ago playing with him, you can actually hear him shout when the stadium is full.

“He’s that type of guy, and I’m sure he’ll be doing that in the background helping everybody.

“The one thing that you have to be careful of is he’ll have to really manage his minutes when he gets back.

“I know he’ll be desperate to play once he’s back, but we saw when Virgil van Dijk came back from his ACL, it took him a little bit of time to get up to speed.

“It’ll be the same for him so he has to be patient and when he’s ready come back into the fold.

“I’m sure the manager (Unai Emery) will use him, but they have plenty of options so they have the time to ease him back in.”
