Stefan Borson: Man City could part-pay £200,000-a-week wages to sell star

Manchester City could have to subsidise Joao Cancelo’s wages if they want to sell him before the transfer deadline.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that could be the only option available to the Premier League champions unless they can find a Saudi Arabian club willing to buy the Portugal international.

Cancelo has spent the past year-and-a-half away from the Etihad after he joined Bayern Munich on loan in January 2023 and spent last season with Barcelona.

Man City are keen to offload the 30-year-old before the 30 August transfer deadline as he’s no longer in Pep Guardiola’s plans.

Spanish news outlet Sport reported on 10 August Cancelo only has his heart set on a move back to Barcelona and the La Liga giants are preparing to make an initial loan offer worth £6million that will include a clause to buy him for £17million next summer.

Man City have very few buyers lining up to sign Joao Cancelo

Borson revealed there are very few buyers for the versatile defender, who Man City signed in a £60million deal from Juventus in 2019.

He told Football Insider: “It’s common where you have got a player who is on very big money and the likely suitor for that player is financially in the tier below.

“I think City have got that kind of situation with Cancelo, who has been at Barcelona on loan.

“There are very few buyers for him and he’s probably on in excess of £200,000 a week.

“The only real options are to loan him to Barcelona because they can’t afford to buy him or they will have to subsidise his wages unless they can find a Saudi club to take him on.”
